Full house for FMRQ Symposium on Quebec Medical Residents’ Financial Health

On May 3, 2019, Medical Resident Day in Quebec, the FMRQ held a Symposium on Financial Health—for which more than 430 medical residents gathered at Montreal’s Centre Mont-Royal—on the theme of “Up to your neck in debt!” They discussed tips, tricks, and advice for managing their finances more effectively during residency, on entering practice, and in the longer term. They attended the presentation of quite surprising data on Quebec medical residents’ debt levels and economic and financial knowledge, following a survey conducted in recent weeks. They were given striking and sometimes provocative advice on management and consumption by Quebec’s favourite accountant, Pierre-Yves McSween. And a panel of doctors at the start of practice shared their financial journeys through residency, fellowship, and the early days of practice, allowing the medical residents attending to leave with several tools that will help them manage their finances more effectively and make more personally and professionally enlightened economic decisions in the coming years.
