Burnout
Quebec resident physicians have a 1 in 2 chance of suffering from burnout symptoms during residency. Burnout is a major issue for the entire medical profession.
What is burnout?
Burnout is defined as a state of extreme physical, mental and emotional fatigue caused by the presence of chronic stress related to work, job role or work/life balance.
Burnout and depression, two very different terms
Burnout should not be confused with depression. Depression is a well-documented, treatable and recognized mental illness. Burnout, on the other hand, although it has been the subject of several studies, is not recognized as a mental disorder. It is a work-related condition that negatively affects the worker’s performance, while having negative effects on other aspects of his or her life.
