Podcast on Bill 83 with Dr Soufi: 100% in Favour of the Public System, but You Still Have to Find a Position

“In an ideal world, we all want to work in a public system. But there are factors that mean it’s not always possible to find the position you’re looking for, or even to find any position at all!”, FMRQ President, Dr Ghassen Soufi, explains in the podcast La santé : au-delà des maux, concerning Bill 83, An Act to foster the practice of medicine in the public health and social services network.

In an interview with Dr Jean-Pierre Gagné, Dr Soufi talks of the dangers of imposing on young physicians the requirement to practise for five years in the public healthcare system. “I don’t want to see an attitude that says you’ve put in your five years, you’ve repaid your debt, now you can go where you want, you don’t owe the public a thing anymore.” And he goes on to say that imposing this five-year requirement won’t solve all the system’s problems.

This podcast also touches on the next steps with respect to the negotiations with the MSSS for renewal of the collective agreement, as well as the latest survey, which found that around three-quarters of resident doctors say they’re suffering from burnout.
